Wennapuwa ASP sudden transfer brought up in Parliament

The controversy over the transfer of the Wennappuwa Assistant Superintendent of Police, Even as the Sri Lanka Police’s annual transfers are underway, the controversy over the transfer of the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Eric Perera heading the Wennappuwa Crimes Prevention Unit even made it into the Parliament this week.

Allegations have been rife that ASP Perera and the branch has been dismantled and its officers transferred due to the influence of a State Minister hailing from the area.

Responding to these accusations, Public Security Minister Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara the ASP was transferred for different reasons and an inquiry is also underway into the transfer. As for the transfers of the other Policemen of the unit, Weerasekara said two PCs attached to the branch had requested for transfers and they had been granted.
